Why Counterclockwise
Do the high-density south coast first, then keep the north flexible
From Reykjavik, the route starts with the Golden Circle, south coast, and glacier lagoon before turning east and north. For a first loop this is easier to read: the classic high-density scenery comes early, and later side trips can be trimmed if wind, weather, or energy dip.
Season Strategy
Keep Route 1 as the backbone; side trips are low-risk additions
The Ring Road is usually more stable than highland routes, but the north and east can still bring strong wind, sleet, and localized ice. Treat highland F-roads as outside the baseline plan.
Lodging Advice
Lock in the south coast and glacier-lagoon area first; keep the north flexible
The hardest and most useful nights to book early are around Vik, Hofn, and Myvatn / Akureyri. If you later choose the 8-day route, merging one northern night is easier.
