Why Zermatt needs special handling

Driving only goes as far as Täsch

Zermatt is a car-free mountain town, so do not set it as your final driving parking point. Park in Täsch and take the shuttle train into Zermatt; where you stay depends on budget and whether you want direct early-morning Matterhorn access.

Weather strategy

For Swiss mountains, do not check only city weather

Pilatus, Rigi, First, Jungfraujoch, and Gornergrat all depend on cloud height. The value of the 11-day plan is giving Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt more room to reshuffle.

Handle vignettes and parking first

Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and France have different rules. Austrian/Swiss motorway vignettes or e-tickets, city parking, and valley transfer points matter more to execution than a simple list of sights.

Mountain Weather Before mountain lifts and scenic railways, check cloud levels, wind, thunderstorms, and operating status.
If you land in Munich that day, do not drive straight to Innsbruck. Stay in Munich or near the airport, then start properly the next day.
